Are Oxen Sluggish?

“Oxen were sluggish, but when there was a requirement to overcome inertia,

they pulled with an undaunted and consistent strength until things began to move again” Reprinted with authorization from Farmers Weekly September 17th 2004 FOR TWO thousand years and more, oxen (or bullocks) were the primary monsters of problem on British farms and roadways.

Furthermore, because William Fox Talbot did not ideal his negative-positive photographic procedure up until the 1840s, extremely couple of pictures now exist to advise us simply how extensive using oxen remained in the British countryside. In regards to large muscle power, an ox was usually thought about to be half as strong as an excellent horse, though 2 oxen might handle any single horse.

At the end of their working life oxen likewise made great beef – after a couple of months in a fattening pen. DOCILE Livestock were not specifically reproduced as work animals, but farmers and carters were always on the lookout for big, strong, docile bullocks which could be broken to harness instead of sent to the butcher.

After weeks or months on the roadway, such animals were lean and healthy, while daily close contact with drovers and their pets had typically got rid of that skittishness so common among young cattle. Oxen normally worked in pairs and animals needed to be carefully matched for size, strength and especially for height.

That yoke was then kept in location by an ox-bow, which curved around under the beast’s neck. As soon as a pair was selected they ended up being each other’s companions for life, working side-by-side and never ever far apart whether grazing in meadows or sleeping in the ox barn. Each ox had a name and within the set one had a single syllable name and one had a longer name.

Working livestock needed to be shod and, since they had cloven hooves, that involved fitting 2 half-moon shaped iron shoes or “cues” to each foot. Livestock are disinclined or not able to base on 3 legs while a farrier fixes shoes to the 4th foot, so an ox-shoeing process was somewhat rough.

As soon as all feet had been cut and brand-new shoes nailed in place, the ox was released. It was the Enclosures Act of 1801, and with it the death of a middle ages open-fields approach to farming, that began a quick decline in making use of oxen as beasts of problem. On the land a team of six or 8 great beasts harnessed in sets one behind the other was just too unwieldy to plough or harrow into corners of the brand-new, smaller sized fields, however two or three horses harnessed side by side might do so with ease.

On the roadways, ox wagons continued to plod their way across the countryside

for many more years and still dominated the road-going heavy-haulage end of the transportation market. But in the 1830s railway mania grasped Britain. Unexpectedly it was possible for coal, iron, wood, grain and other bulky materials to be carried at 30mph by rail instead of 0.

This was awful news for carters with their ox wagons, and equally disagreeable for stage-coach business, which discovered themselves being run the roadways one by one whenever a train opened and replicated among their routes. By 1850 working oxen had all, however vanished from Britain. Nevertheless, when a traction engine got stranded in a ditch or a horse-drawn load recovered and really bogged down or a steam engine came off the rails, a group of oxen (if one might be found) was the favored service to the problem.

Horses, by contrast, trusted a jerking action, which was frequently less efficient. So, when next you till up what looks like a rusty and damaged horseshoe, take a more detailed look. It might be the shoe of an ox which was working on that extremely area centuries earlier.Beautiful Shire Horses

The ‘Gentleman Farmer’ attempts to enhance agriculture by subjecting practices to factor and scientific thought. Kames was born at Eccles, Berwickshire, in 1696 to an impoverished family estate which just permitted him to be privately educated. In 1712 he was indentured to a Writer to the Signet and eleven years later he was contacted us to the Bar, and ended up being Judge of the Court of Session in 1752, Lord Justiciary in 1763.

Kames sought to base his work upon his own experiences, and writing the book for property owners as they were the ones with the resources and the earnings interest to follow his recommendations. Apparently he was right: the work went through six editions by 1815. His ideas were popular both in England and America.

They are similarly tractable and they are fed and preserved at much less cost.

As this enhancement is obvious to the meanest capacity, one might anticipate to see every farmer greedily embracing it as he would a beast after being famished. Men are led in chains by custom-made and fettered against their better interests.

What warms me to this subject is the fantastic intake of oats by workhorses, which would be totally conserved by utilizing oxen. Did our own item furnish this intake, it were less to be regretted, however is severe to be lowered to the requirement of importing each year vast quantities of oats all of which would be saved by utilizing oxen only on the farm.

I begin with verifying that an ox is as tractable as a horse and as quickly trained to a plough or a cart. I have seen a number of them in a plough going on sweetly without a chauffeur as a couple of horses, directed by the voice alone without a rein.

Fell Pony

A Fell Pony. Coming from Cumbria these are one of the smaller,

For 2 horses you will need a minimum of an acre of grazing, probably more to permit for some pasture rotation (see ‘health’ below). Fencing must be at least 4 feet 6 inches high and should not be sheep netting or barbed wire, both of which can lead to injury for horses.

If you can manage it, post and rail is a really good option, but it can be very pricey. A lot of working horse types are durable and can live out all year round, nevertheless they need to always have a field shelter. Ideally your field shelter should have a partial 4th wall rather than being totally open-fronted, to supply defense from the wind and rain in the worst weather condition.

This may be a field shelter with a door, or it might be a separate stable. Horse pulling a narrowboat on a British canal. Horses require a high percentage of their diet plan to be roughage; they ought to be provided plenty grazing, supplemented by good quality hay or haylage especially in the winter season.

Depending how difficult your horse is working, and its individual metabolic process, constant access to great quality yard and hay may be all your horse needs, perhaps with a little sugar beet and alfalfa for additional energy in the winter season. If your horse starts to lose condition in the winter then you may need to offer more concentrated feeds, this could be a mixture of grains and vegetables such as peas, however ought to make up a small part of your horses diet and be fed in percentages (i.

2 or 3 times a day instead of simultaneously). Horses should always have access to tidy drinking water and a mineral lick. The Highland pony is a durable pony native to Scotland. They can be an excellent choice for those searching for a little working animal (picture: Velvet, innovative commons).

Opinions vary on just how much a horse ought to be groomed,

with some individuals thoroughly brushing their horses every day and others only hardly ever. At the minimum you should ensure your horse’s legs and feet do not remain caked in mud and brush the sweat off them after they have actually been working.

Grooming your horse is a possibility to examine them for any issues such as lice. Many working horses in the UK are shod, especially if they will be strolling on difficult surfaces. Horses can likewise be offered specialist shoes if they will be working on slippery ground. Shoes are around 100 a set, and need to be changed every 6-8 weeks.

this includes trimming the hoof in a manner that mimics the natural wearing process (of a wild horse on diverse surface). Advocates of this technique state it not just promotes a more powerful, much healthier hoof however prevents other leg and foot issues by maintaining the horses natural movement. If you decrease this route your horses feet will still need routine trimming and attention by a knowledgeable person.

Great pasture management can assist avoid this ending up being a problem. Research study pasture rotation systems, where locations of grazing are rested for time periods. Removing dung from the field also assists, though it can be time consuming job. It utilized to be suggested that horses be wormed every 12 weeks, nevertheless, it is very important not to treat your animals for worms more typically than essential, as this can lead to resistance to the medications.

You can now easily buy sets to do this yourself, or you can send faecal samples to a laboratory who will do it for you. Find an excellent veterinarian who has experience with horses and inspect your horses over everyday. Discover to look out for signs of typical problems such as laminitis and colic.

Training horses is a huge subject, and there are several methods and techniques. If you prepare to do this make sue you have the aid of an experienced person who is generous with their time, and expect it to take many moths to train a horse to dependably work in harness.

When this is going efficiently you can start to believe about putting executes or machinery to them, ideally starting with a job with which the horse recognizes. Dealing with horses can be unsafe, however experience will help you remove the risk element. You can’t eliminate the danger completely though you’ll require to be fit and strong yourself, and have great deals of typical sense.

For horse logging you’ll require a collar, a basic pulling harness, chains and spreader bar which will pertain to around 350.

You can make your own harnesses if you have leather-working abilities. If you’re doing work off-site for other individuals, you’ll need insurance and risk evaluations. You’ll also require security gear such as steel-toecap boots and a difficult hat, and if you’re a novice, you’ll require somebody working with you. Heavy Horses

Jonathan Waterer has actually spurned pricey agricultural equipment

and counts on his stunning heavy horses to work his 100 acres of land. The five Shires and Dales pony are a throwback to a bygone age of farming, before the creation of the internal combustion engine. The dependable steeds weigh nearly a ton each and stand at well over 18 hands high.

The work horses take the lead with the 57-year-old farmer directing operations with tack equipment and standard farming equipment purchased from the Amish individuals of Ohio, US. Mr Waterer, who has actually owned Higher Biddacott Farm in Barnstable for 21 years, breaks in 30 to 40 heavy horses a year for other owners.

In a stark contrast between old and new, the next door farmer utilizes four tractors and the exact same number of employees to do the same task. Along with low running expenses, the ecological benefits of utilizing the conventional methods of farming are obvious. His horses might appear familiar to film and duration drama fans as they have emerged in Pride and Bias, Vanity Fair, Lark Increase to Candleford, Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Poldark.

” I break in 30 to 40 horses a year and this is the best way to get them going. I can put a young horse in between 2 of my Shires to get it to work as a group. “There are only a few people still tilling with Shire horses.

” Of all the animals people have actually domesticated, the horse is the most essential to our history.” Elton Gallegly Working horses are usually heavy (or draught) horses utilized for transport, working agricultural land, and forestry work. On farms horses can be used for anything from land preparation to harvesting, including ploughing, sowing and haymaking.

Horses are believed to have actually been domesticated as long earlier as 4000 BCE and have actually been utilized for hunting, transportation, warfare and farming throughout human history.

A lot of communication between individuals in the herd is through body language, this expressiveness might be part of what makes the horse so appealing. Their responsiveness to body movement and sensitivity to supremacy, along with their interest, is what makes them simple to train. Horses are progressed to run away and have a strong flight reaction, in types utilized for working, this reaction has been dulled by selective breeding to produce more docile animals.

Working horses tend to be stockily built, with verification adapted for pulling and carrying loads, with short, broad backs and powerful hind quarters. They likewise need to be calm, docile and easy to work with. British breeds of heavy horse consist of the Shire, Clydesdale and Suffolk Punch. Other countries have their own types, including some smaller breeds such as the Austrian Haflinger.

Cobs are not as effective as Shires or the other bigger breeds, but they are cheaper to keep. In fact, many of the native pony types of the UK were originally developed to work and can still be used in this method, even the small Shetland. Horses have a much lower effect on the land than heavy machinery, triggering less, and much shorter term, damage to soil structure and flora and fauna.

This lower effect likewise means horses can be used on boggy ground

or early in the year when the land is too wet for heavy equipment. Furthermore, the manoeuvreability of horses means they can be used on steeper and less open websites than tractors. Horses are not fuelled by fossil fuels however by turf and other plants, much of which you might have the ability to grow yourself or obtain locally from sustainable sources.

Systemic financial and planning modification is required if farmers (and the rest people) can live and operate at a slower rate, more in harmony with nature, without being bankrupted. Working with horses is a lifestyle that can bring personal and environmental wellness. If you have actually never ever dealt with horses discover a method to invest a long time with them.

Spending as much time with horses as you can before you take on horse yourself might make your life much easier later on; horses are extremely delicate to body language, and even a docile working type will benefit from somebody they sense is inexperienced. Utilizing the appropriate body language can be taught, however comes most easily through experience.

Think about the area you have and the work you require your horse, or pony, to do. Larger types are more pricey to buy and keep than smaller ones, and it makes little sense to buy a Shire horse when a Highland pony might quickly do the work.

You need to keep at least 2 horses. If you just require one expensive working horse, your second horse could be a retired pony or a horse unsuitable for work for some factor, but otherwise healthy. Draft horses

A draft horse is generally a big,

heavy horse appropriate for farm labor 2 horses hitched to a plow A draft horse (United States), draught horse (UK) or dray horse (from the Old English dragan meaning “to draw or transport”; compare Dutch dragen and German tragen meaning “to bring” and Danish drage significance “to draw” or “to fare”), less typically called a carthorse, work horse or heavy horse, is a big horse bred to be a working animal doing hard jobs such as plowing and other farm labor.

Draft horses and draft crossbreds are flexible breeds utilized today for a wide variety of purposes, including farming, draft horse revealing, logging, entertainment, and other uses. They are likewise frequently utilized for crossbreeding, specifically to light riding breeds such as the Thoroughbred, for the function of creating sport horses of warmblood type.

Draft horses are recognizable by their tall stature and exceptionally muscular develop. In general, they tend to have a more upright shoulder, producing more upright motion and conformation that is well fit for pulling. They tend to have broad, brief backs with effective hindquarters, again finest suited for the function of pulling.

Many have a straight profile or “Roman nose” (a convex profile). Draft breeds vary from approximately 16 to 19 hands (64 to 76 inches; 163 to 193 cm) high and from 1,400 to 2,000 lb (640 to 910 kg). Draft horses crossbred on light riding horses adds height and weight to the taking place offspring, and might increase the power and “scope” of the animal’s movement.

He stood 21. 2 hands (86 inches, 218 cm) high, and his peak weight was approximated at 1,524 kgs (3,360 pound). At over 19 hands (76 inches, 193 cm), a Shire gelding called Goliath was the Guinness Book of World Records record holder for the world’s highest horse up until his death in 2001.

One type of horse-powered work was the hauling of heavy loads,

plowing fields, and other tasks that required pulling ability. A heavy, calm, client and well-muscled animal was preferred for this work. On the other hand, a light, more energetic horse was needed for riding and quick transportation. Therefore, to the extent possible, a particular amount of selective breeding was used to establish different types of horse for various kinds of work.

The truth was that the high-spirited, quick-moving Destrier was closer to the size, build, and personality of a contemporary Andalusian or Friesian. There also were working farm horses of more phlegmatic characters used for pulling military wagons or performing ordinary farm work which provided families of the contemporary draft horse.

Of the modern draft types, the Percheron probably has the closest ties to the middle ages war horse. These Shire horses are utilized to pull a brewery dray delivering beer to bars in England. In this image, members of the public are being provided a trip. By the 19th century horses weighing more than 1,600 pounds (730 kg) that likewise moved at a quick speed were in demand.

The railways increased need for working horses, as a growing economy still needed transportation over the ‘last mile’ in between the goods lawn or station and the final client. Even in the 20th century, draft horses were utilized for useful work, consisting of over half a million used throughout World War I to support the military effort, till motor lorries ended up being an affordable and trustworthy replacement.

Percherons originated from France, Belgians from Belgium, Shires from England, Clydesdales from Scotland. Many American draft windows registries were established in the late 19th century. The Percheron, with 40,000 broodmares signed up since 1915, was America’s many various draft breed at the turn of the 20th century. A type established solely in the U.S.

Start in the late 19th century, and with increasing mechanization in the 20th century, especially following World War I in the US and after World War II in Europe, the appeal of the internal combustion engine, and particularly the tractor, reduced the need for the draft horse. Numerous were offered to slaughter for horsemeat and a variety of breeds entered into considerable decline.

Nevertheless, they are still seen on some smaller sized farms in the United States and Europe. They are particularly popular with groups such as Amish and Mennonite farmers, as well as those people who want to farm with a sustainable source of power. They are also often utilized throughout forestry management to get rid of logs from thick woodland where there is insufficient area for mechanized strategies.

Little locations still exist where draft horses are extensively

used as transport due to legislation preventing vehicle traffic, such as on Mackinac Island in the United States. Feeding, looking after and shoeing a one-ton draft horse is expensive. Although numerous draft horses can work without a need for shoes, if they are required, farriers may charge twice the rate to shoe a draft horse as a light riding horse since of the extra labor and customized equipment required.

The draft horse’s metabolic process is a bit slower than riding horse types, more akin to that of ponies, needing less feed per pound of body weight. This is perhaps due to their calmer nature. Nevertheless, since of their large size, most need a significant amount of fodder per day. Normally a supplement to balance nutrients is chosen over a large amount of grain.

5% to 3% of their body weight per day, depending on work level. They also can consume up to 25 US gallons (95 l; 21 imp gal) of water a day. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and danger of laminitis can be a concern. The Shire horse holds the record for the world’s greatest horse; Sampson, foaled in 1846 in Bedfordshire, England, stood 21.

How to Breed Draft Horses – Percheron – Blegium Horse -TvAgro by Juan Gonzalo Angel

throughout history horses have been domesticated by mankind for a wide variety of uses such as sport agriculture and heavy work the draft horse is a work animal prized for their pulling capacity they have played an important role in history during the time of the Industrial Revolution they were used for ploughing or pulling agricultural machinery and as horsepower attached to cars and carriages hence the name warhorse or draught horse all draft horse breeds share similar characteristics they tend to be very tall animals their height can range from 1.6 meters all the way up to 1.8 metres at the withers they possess a great deal of muscle and there are approximate weight ranges from 600 to 1,000 kilos among these breeds there are the Belgian and the Percheron for this program we will talk to experts in different regions of Colombia about these breeds also we learned about their characteristics how to care for them and what activities are performed with these animals Belgium lead if we go back a few years and we look at the first horses that were domesticated we can see that we always thought large tall horses that was what humans originally wanted that is very large horses and we looked for ways to achieve a very large size that actually resulted in certain complications in certain health problems since we bred horses that were so heavy they had problems with their aplomb in conformation from that point onwards people started to focus not just on size but under conformation we looked for horses that were easier to handle that had an easier time working whose conformation and bone structure facilitated movement and didn't work against it we started to focus away from aesthetics and towards functionality so nowadays those horses that weigh 1,200 kilos are not as common now what we seek are horses that weigh between 800 and 900 kilos maybe even 1,000 kilos but we're looking for more functional horses that don't have as many a plumb and conformation problems that prevent them from working and work is really their strong point that is what they are bred to do it's really useless to have a pretty-looking draft horse that cannot work Belgian work horses are known throughout the world for being heavy draft horses they are known as cold blooded the temperament of this particular breed is very different than that of the Columbian Criollo horse since it's very calm docile even tempered and gentle that makes it a horse that it's easy to work with it walks slowly due to its large sized body weight and corporeal strength this also facilitates its handling one of the main characteristics of these Belgian horses is that they only come in one color Sorel although in some occasions their tone can be either a little lighter or a little darker their mane and tails are also white as is the hair on the lower anterior and posterior areas these horses are very tall there are horses whose height ranges between 1.6 and 1.7 meters in height it's a horse with a very broad chest which is made for pulling their limbs our short bones thick and solid with good conformation the head is larger more compact with a flat forehead their eyes are sweet looking not like the eyes of an Arabian that are pointed their eyes are calm and sweet they are also called Brabant or Flemish horse just like Percherons they are horses that have been evolved in bred to pull loads for heavy work they are very resilient horses their main characteristic is their Sorel color in their white ming's which is an important detail for people and the general TV audience to note and it's that in Colombia we always associate large horses with Percheron but in reality Percheron only refers to a black and dappled horse this is a belgium they are very strong horses very docile with many of the same general characteristics of heavy draft horses they're noble attentive willing to work and they can generate that special energy and bond that you get between humans and horses through work heavy draft horses heavy draft horses all horses require special treatment in order to tame them so that they can perform a particular task or exercise and this breed is not the exception the work that these animals do when they start going through the taming process it takes a lot longer than with Criollo horses so you don't start taming as young with these horses you start their training when they are three and a half years old almost four when they have attained sufficient muscular skeletal formation so we can be assured that they can tolerate the strain they will endure and that we won't harm their health or development in any way these horses are initiated at an early age fortunately they are very docile which makes it possible for their training to be calm and easy it also depends on the type of work they are being prepped for either just as draft horses or if they will be written as well we start off working with ropes first the horse must be tamed from the back and from its mouth afterwards we can begin with hitching loads but that is done progressively first they are attached to carriages without any weight so that they can get used to it then they begin walking backwards turning walking forward and lastly they begin the exhibition our load carrying work that you need basically the job of these animals is to pull and carry this is their true function for this reason the horses are bred raised in genetically improved all of these processes are focused on their load carrying function and the job they have to fulfill in Colombia these draft breeds also have been used for sports pleasure riding and recreation a good percentage of them is found in the high plains of Kundun America I would say that Bogota is the place where draft horses have survived it's the place where they have had the most support where the Colombian Association of draft horses has fought so much for them raising them so they can improve every day so that the new lines that are being bred in the United States in Europe can arrive here and they can evolve into the animals we want to race hersh run breed the Belgian is not the only draft horse breed among this group of heavy draft horses there is also the Percheron let's explore some of its characteristics these are some of the breeds that we have here at the equine station among the draft breeds there is a great deal of variety we have two of the most important and recognized breeds in the world this one here is a pressure on this is a breed that originated in France and they are characterized by their two most common colors which are black and dappled these horses are called draft horses or cold blooded horses when we talk about cold blooded we are referring to character and temperament never to body temperature these are horses bred to pull and for traction on the field as well as for recreation entertainment and sport dappled Percheron this is another one of our breeding studs this is a horse that was imported from Argentina it shows another of the colors that you can find in Percheron horses we find them in black dappled or in a color that we call procedure or red apple speaking of feeding requirements people have the impression that because they're large horses they eat a lot it's logical that a horse will eat proportional to its size and the amount of feed is tied to that weight in that body volume but they have a given conversion capacity meaning that they don't necessarily have to eat large amounts of food in order to sustain a body like this once they reach a normal body conditioning as you can see in these horses which are a phenomenal size these horses tend not to be overly fat or overly skinny because of the work that they do they tend to be very athletic so perhaps people have some misconceptions with regards to larger horse really what sets these breeds apart is their conversion capacity that is their ability to convert more of their food into muscle mass this is the same with human beings and other living beings depending on their genetic traits their breeds and they will have a higher or lower conversion ratio no matter how much they eat as you can see these are very heavy horses very large in size and very strong I think nature is very wise I think it gave him outside strength in size but it also calmed down their temperament because otherwise that would be extremely difficult to handle this makes them more docile or quote more goofy end quote but this is also what makes him such a powerhouse in work and in sport so those are their main traits they are very peaceful and manageable animals but also very strong and powerful and if we know how to harness this strength then we will benefit greatly as is the case here in the park their role is to pull the carriages carrying tourists and take them around the park they work in a system that I call a trunk when we talk about a trunk in light of heavy draft horses we're talking about a carriage pulled by two horses at once so that they can divide the load and so that the horses can perform their job well heavy draft horses heavy draft horses a draft horse requires specialized care and conditions that are a function of its job to learn more about this carlos spoke to us about how these animals have adapted to these conditions everything undergoes a process of evolution conditioning and adaptation these horses were first imported many years ago and as with many other species that had been imported into Colombia over the years they had to adapt to this tropical climate we have imported equine and bovine livestock from Europe United States and other seasonal countries these horses traditionally belong in these colder climates if we were to talk about optimal conditions for them then we could say that they favor lower temperatures they work better at higher altitudes as well at any rate they have had time to adapt and nowadays you find them well adapted to all altitudes and climates they are very resistant unlike the Percheron there are a number of breeds that are more sensitive to temperature among these is the Belgian breed it's a breed that is affected by high temperatures they become agitated entire easily however it's a function of managing the adaptation generally all of these breeds are very resistant and easy to handle their nobility and tranquility are expressions of their true nature these character traits help them to better endure their workloads because as they expend more energy they become more Restless and their stress levels tend to increase crossbreeds one of the crosses we perform here and generally across the world is creating mules we know that they resolved as the cross between a horse and a donkey this particular animal here has the characteristic that she is the daughter of a draft mare she is a cross between a Percheron mayor and a Catalan donkey hence her size her strength her body size and her work capacity this mule is approximately 15 years old she arrived at the park while she was still very young and this is what she is known for around here meaning that people admire her a lot because it is rare to encounter a meal of this size but her size is due to what she inherited from her parents a Percheron draught layer and a Catalan donkey that's where she gets her strength and size we are constantly performing that cross here because as we all know mules have a very high work capacity and they're very resilient so we use them to give our horses a break for example if one of our horses has the ability to do it 24 or 30 kilometer route mules could easily double that workload so this allows us to increase our work capacity and improve the efficiency of our carriages without wearing at the animals so much so this is a cross that we do here all the time and with very good results mules are Noble docile and have a very high capacity for work they can maintain that productivity that body conditioning enduring less fatigue because she's the daughter of a draft mayor she will inherit that noble character from her mother so let's say that they can inherit the ease of taming and the ease of working and because that tranquil temperament they inherit will make it easier and faster to train them keep in mind that these animals are trained as draft horses not so much for writing you are not training the animal to perform difficult movements or turns or anything like that their training is really basic go forward go backwards and learn to handle loads that is all we try to do with draft horses teach them to tolerate and handle the loads that we're tasking them with we have had very good results particularly in terms of endurance these animals are what allow us to guarantee carriage service to visitors here at the park during times of demand overflow so that is how mules can offer us an advantage over horses in Colombia everyone likes meals and you can find many comments and stories regarding them personally I think everyone is looking for a good meal a pretty fat large meal I think that no matter where you place them these animals will always have lots of our Myers so I think it adds a lot of value to have them here they're also demanded in the marketplace here we sell a lot of meals like this one so we're consistently breeding them and handling them heavy draft horses heavy draft horses depending on their activities all horse breeds must receive specialized nutrition and care especially in the case of heavy draft horses let's look into their nutritional and care requirements these animals have a very sensitive metabolism these horses weigh anywhere between 850 and 1100 kilos by contrast a Criollo horse may weigh in a range between 340 and 400 kilos approximately in terms of nutrition they eat 10% of their live weight so these horses ingest a great deal of grass and fiber the horses that we keep here eat one bale of hay during the day and another during the night in addition to hay these horses can eat approximately ten kilos of cut grass the grass they are eating is king grass without any added mixtures it is grown between 40 and 45 days after it is cut it is left to rest for two to three days afterwards it is chopped and fed to the animals throughout the day at night we don't feed them cut king grass instead we feed them kikuyo which is previously bailed is not completely dry it is a grass that has been drying for four to five days in addition to that we feed them a kilo of feed concentrate every three hours meaning a total of six kilos of feed per day we are in a cold climate but because they are in confinement their water consumption is very high this is extremely important even more so than food they need to have fresh water all day that is we change out their water four or five times a day when the hay is dry it makes them very thirsty and add to that the feed and the salt so they need a lot of water first of all for us it's a special treat to be able to appreciate horses of this magnitude compared to these horses all others seem very small and I call everything else a small horse no matter how big they are generally speaking this breed of draught horses have a very noble temperament we can see that the Columbian Criollo horse has a temper as well as I'm not saying either one is better thankfully they have that temper because it's nice to ride a horse that is very eager but these horses are made for pulling and dragging they are patient and know how to wait imagine a horse tied to a wagon for four hours waiting to be loaded a Criollo horse would dig holes and try to eat the harness he'll be nervous by contrast these horses will remain completely calm just staring ahead one important detail is that you have to know how to handle these horses the person in charge of them must be skilled enough to accurately determine when the animal needs something or doesn't I don't think you can apply strict rules to horse management nor can you be arbitrary about it you have to constantly monitor the horse what it likes doesn't like what hurts or doesn't hurt so we try to keep very competent staff on hand with a highly developed common sense so that they can monitor the situation and make judgment calls with the horses as needed the contribution of the horse to the development of most civilization is incalculable but despite all of the services they have rendered to mankind our gratitude has not translated into humans providing horses with better living conditions they don't need medals or trophies they rise above human banality let's take care of them and help them feel free

Gewalt aus der Kindheit zeigt sich im Pferdeumgang am deutlichsten

the clients came to the salons for a two-day demonstration seminar cool everything i knew about the prehistory of this horse was that she was in als picked up herself, and her mother also studied a Hanoverian woman obsessed with the study she never had problems but liberty developed already recommended age as foster and rebel she had to have him castrated quickly because he is a super climber has developed many problems with the floor work that have pushed you to your limits With the leading area the problems were getting bigger because the partie just got up and booked she just thought the horse would be crazy and therefore seeks help in the salon school in the demonstrations in seminars i always proceed in such a way that i also include video clips Let the owners of the horse bring them from home as they do at home dealing with your horse i then read the viewers with the films look and everyone should show me what he sees, what he perceives and what he does holds a wide variety of voices I have heard of yes that is a difficult horse it disrespectful then yes that's a bit too tough as one it leads him and there is not all these different views stubborn in the market first contribute to all of what we see because I have brought with me videos of the client has not yet seen how she works with him I asked the client to go to the animus kohl show how she handles her horse here too, the spectators have to go ahead Again your opinion on what you see and what you think or feel In addition, like the owner with her horses, what I'm doing up to this time I saw that the drive took a lot of freedom that it was permanent there is no trust checked and there is also the language of the horses body language and horse psychology very little understanding available I have not yet shared my opinions because I haven't done everything yet have seen as long as the horses are still on the lunge or on be held in a halter do not squeeze yourself a hundred percent honest from you are afraid that the pain will come from us that will hold you and that's why you can really only see the whole picture when the horse is free when liberty was free they actually came for me predominant energies expressing the horse now reflected all over grip of its owner in the highest measure despite the threat she shows, she smiles and doesn't take it as a threat true in this exercise the horse is so stressed that's all it does just to get a tasty treat here, too, is apparently not recognizable for the owner that horse is totally crazy, it begs and begs and has at all I didn't understand what the point of this whole thing is in spite of everything, tv seems to prefer to be at the mercy of being forced to his owner to do everything possible to please her because that's easy the kind of connectedness the horses follow out of their instincts horses don't understand why humans do what they do after all the observations and the almost one-day preparation of the ten-member audience and after consulting with explanatory I have then said what i see the one prevailing force of this over grip shows me very clearly that clients are very big from a young age At the mercy of abuse someone was very abusive and it did yes no one helped so the woman has from hers feelings separated and no longer perceives today it is threatened it is your everyday life and it has become a habit since it has become a matter of course for her, she now also works with liberty should one other energy is still there that the horse shows exactly that there is still someone pulls on her and manipulates her Euro the client was already in one at this point advanced healing phase prefer tea comes to me and got it he needed water he has lost his inner rhythm and it's not that what you then have to do with the horse that you work with him but the horse knows exactly if you offer him something whether that is good for him and me did nothing the whole first day but for a very long time to offer knock that gave back in a rhythm with which he ultimately gave Healed himself on the second day, it was what he got back immediately did he want to be knocked and it was visibly better for him then he turned away and finally rolled around in a relaxed manner, he puffed just off and it was as if he finally had the relief for his owner found here in the salinger school regarding body language and horse psychology i have the clients Recommended that you come back to a 6 day seminar to really be there To learn everything about horses afterwards you can all just be with get liberty ready at home and correct the horse yourself that are now not allowed to go again and again for a change at the end of the seminar i took to the streets with liberty really showing how to lead him on a long rope, always on it make sure that he now keeps the distance and really at a distance with someone with it goes that he is no longer firmly on the ground that he is told to come the other no more danger and really leaves enough room for it he can look and just move, that's the most important thing is really predominant for him now and even if he goes here quickly and I just overtook me a bit and said mine friend and he looks and he stays there I don't have to pull and hear nothing I then give him a treat as a reward to say that it's great made and the horse really understands everything
